The Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO) Education Department has announced that well over half of the students have passed their high school graduation exams for the 2021-2022 school year. Of the 2,192 students who took their exams at the 9 examination centres in the KIO’s area, 1680 passed and 308 passed with distinction.

After schools across Burma were closed following the military coup more than 15 months ago, many students enrolled in schools located in the ethnic armed group’s area along the Chinese border.

Naw Htoi, secretary of the KIO Education Department, told KNG that the students will receive $27 for each subject in which they received distinction and the teachers of these students will receive $54.

Five students have achieved distinction in five subjects, 16 students achieved distinction in four subjects, 31 in three subjects, 82 in two subjects and 174 in one subject.

The students wrote their exams at Alam Bum, Laiza, Mai Ja Yang, N’bar Pa, Mongmit Sing Li, N’gum La, Kyein Htawng Pa, Mungbaw and Lord Awng secondary schools from 21to 28 April.

Graduates can enrol for higher education at Mai Ja Yang College, Mai Ja Yang Institute of Education, Institute of English Programme and Federal Law Academy, all of these schools are located in KIO’s terrorities.
